Roll-away nest box
A nest box designed with a sloped floor so laid eggs roll gently into a protected collection area.
A roll-away nest box has a gently sloped floor, so an egg laid on it rolls on its own into a separate compartment underneath or behind the main nesting area, out of the hen's reach once it has settled there. This keeps the egg cleaner, cooler, and protected from being sat on, pecked, or accidentally broken by another hen using the same box shortly afterward.
The design is especially useful in flocks where egg eating has become a habit, since a hen cannot develop or continue the habit if she physically cannot reach the egg once it has rolled away. It is also popular in coops with especially productive layers, where boxes see heavy daily use and cleanliness and egg protection matter more than in a small, low-traffic flock.
Getting the slope right takes some tuning: too steep and eggs can pick up enough speed to crack on the way down or on landing, too shallow and eggs sit still instead of rolling away as intended. A common mistake is assuming any nest box with a sloped floor works the same, or finding that hens simply prefer a different, softer box elsewhere in the coop and avoid the roll-away box altogether.
