Automatic coop door

A timed or light-sensing door that automatically closes the coop at dusk to protect the flock.

An automatic coop door opens and closes the entrance to the coop on its own, either on a fixed timer, in response to a light sensor that tracks dusk and dawn, or using a combination of both. The main appeal is safety during the hours predators are most active, since a door that closes reliably at dusk protects a flock even on the evenings a keeper gets home late or forgets entirely.

Light-sensing models automatically adjust as sunset shifts earlier or later through the year, while a pure timer needs manual updates every few weeks to stay in sync with actual daylight. Power source is another real decision: battery units are simple to install anywhere, solar units avoid battery changes but depend on enough sun exposure, and wired units are the most reliable but need power run to the coop.

A common mistake is installing a door with gaps wide enough for a raccoon to pry open, or trusting an automatic door completely without an occasional manual check, which can let a dead battery or a jammed track go unnoticed until birds are shut out overnight or, worse, left open.
